Flash is the most widely accepted technology for rich online animations. Unlike traditional raster based Web graphics, Macromedia's Flash authoring tools incorporate vector based graphics which have a far less overhead requirement on your system.

Vector graphics use underlying geometrical data to define parameters. By altering this data you actually alter these parameters changing the attributes, such as color, size and even shape, of the graphics being displayed. Macromedia's Flash player uses a proprietary scripting language called action script to alter objects in real time simulating animation. This Flash player is a plugin for your browser and if not already installed, is available for free at www.macromedia.com.

The end result is rich graphic content with seamless animations. Also, since the action script is open source, developers can use it to connect to server side objects and databases enhancing the overall capabilities of Flash developers.
